PITTSBURGH, PA – July 15, 2025 — The Pittsburgh sports community has been rocked by the tragic and sudden passing of Aaron “AJ” Beatty, a standout defensive end from Central Catholic High School and a former star athlete at the University of North Carolina. Beatty, known for his power, discipline, and dedication both on and off the field, passed away unexpectedly, leaving behind a legacy that is deeply rooted in Pennsylvania high school football and collegiate athletics.

AJ Beatty: A Promising Athlete with an Unyielding Work Ethic

Aaron “AJ” Beatty’s story began long before he became a force on the football field. His journey to prominence started with his decision to transfer from Bethel Park High School to Central Catholic after his sophomore year, a move that would mark the beginning of his transformation into one of the most formidable athletes in the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL). Standing at 6-foot-3 and weighing 190 pounds, Beatty had the physical presence and drive that set him apart from his peers.

Beatty quickly established himself as one of the top defensive linemen in the region. Known for his quick first step, his ability to read plays, and his relentless pursuit of the ball, AJ was a dominant force on the field. A three-star recruit, he was ranked the No. 9 player in Pennsylvania and was recognized as the 50th-best strongside defensive end in the nation by 247Sports Composite. Rivals had him even higher, ranking him the No. 5 player in the state and the 27th nationally in his position. These accolades only began to scratch the surface of his impact on the game.

High School Glory: Central Catholic’s Pillar of Strength

During his senior season, AJ Beatty earned numerous honors for his incredible performances on the field. He was named first-team all-state by the Harrisburg Patriot-News and was selected to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s “Fab 22”, which recognizes the area’s best players. Beatty’s efforts also earned him first-team all-conference honors as a tight end, displaying his athletic versatility and the broad scope of his talent.

In his final year at Central Catholic, Beatty recorded over 50 tackles, 10 sacks, and was a major contributor to his team’s successful season. His work helped lead Central Catholic to a 12-2 record and a deep run into the state semifinals. As a junior, he had recorded 15 sacks, and his ability to dominate on both the defensive line and at tight end made him one of the most well-rounded athletes in the region. In addition to football, he was also a key player on the lacrosse team, further proving his versatility as an athlete.

The Leadership and Character of AJ Beatty

Beyond his statistical success, AJ was deeply known for his leadership and character. Under the guidance of Coach Terry Totten, Beatty became a driving force behind Central Catholic’s dominance in Class 6A football. Teammates and coaches alike respected him not only for his athletic ability but for the way he led by example both on and off the field.

Beatty’s humility, work ethic, and commitment to excellence were characteristics that made him a role model for younger athletes. He was the type of leader who inspired others, always pushing them to perform their best while maintaining a sense of camaraderie that helped build team unity. His positive attitude and uplifting spirit made him a beloved figure not only among his teammates but also throughout the entire Central Catholic community.

The Road to College Football: A Promising Future Cut Short

After his standout high school career, Beatty’s future in football looked exceedingly bright. In June, Beatty made the decision to commit to the University of North Carolina, choosing the Tar Heels over several other major programs, including Pitt, Purdue, N.C. State, Boston College, South Carolina, and West Virginia. He was recruited primarily as a defensive end and was expected to make an immediate impact at the collegiate level.

With his speed, strength, and football IQ, AJ was poised to have an outstanding college career, contributing to UNC’s defense while continuing to develop his game further. But tragically, his promising future was cut short.

A Legacy of Kindness and Dedication

Born on July 11, AJ Beatty was the beloved son of Aaron Sr. and Kim Beatty. His untimely death has left a profound impact on his family, friends, teammates, and the entire community that had watched him grow into the man he had become. His family, especially his parents and siblings, are left grieving the loss of a son, brother, and friend.

To those who knew him, Beatty was more than just a standout athlete—he was a young man of integrity, kindness, and generosity, always willing to help others and spread positivity. His work ethic and dedication to his craft, coupled with his generous spirit, made him a role model to many in the Pittsburgh community.

Community Remembers AJ Beatty: Support and Memorials

As family, friends, and community members process the devastating loss, the community has rallied around the Beatty family. A GoFundMe campaign has been created to support the family through this tragic time, and the school district plans to commemorate his memory with tributes and memorial services.

Though AJ’s life was tragically cut short, his impact on the football field, in his community, and in the hearts of those who knew him will never be forgotten. As the Myers Park High School and local communities continue to honor his legacy, they will always remember the young man who brought so much light and promise to those around him.

Funeral Arrangements and Support for the Family

Funeral arrangements and visitation hours will be announced at a later time. Family and friends continue to receive support and comfort from the local community during this profoundly difficult time.

AJ Beatty’s untimely passing is a heartbreaking loss to his family, friends, teammates, and the wider community. He leaves behind a legacy of courage, leadership, and dedication that will be cherished by all who knew him.
